Cancer Counil Victoria WEBSITE REFRESH
The Problem
During 2017 Cancer Council Victoria was relying on an of date and clunky website design to service its needs. Due to the nature of non-profit organisations, money is always a careful consideration and a website redesign had been kept on hold out of interest in a potential greater project that was on the horizon.
My Role
The Proposal
With a special interest in ensuring we were developing the best experience for the Cancer sufferers, supporters and fundraisers, and impatient for progress, I set about designing a refreshed version of the website. The goal was to provide a better alternative at a low cost while maintaining quality and without creating cross over wastage with any greater projects.
In Production
Working with the development team to ensure we created something with a low investment of resources, I developed a refreshed homepage design, with a focus on responsive design and presented it alongside the developers to the Digital Manager. With initial approval from the Digital Manager we put forward a case for undertaking user research and testing on a modest budget.
Conducting Research
Unfortunately project constraints prevented the ability to undertake that research, but with the progress we had already made, and the enthusiasm from that progress, we pushed on. We reduced the clutter on site and simplified our sidebars to the core information users required rather than including additional call to actions.
Navigation and Information Architecture
We undertook a card sorting exercise using Treejack and a survey of Cancer Council employees to determine the best website navigation structure and updated to a megamenu to allow for greater control for our users. We created a new format mobile menu to ensure users could access everything they needed while on mobile devices.
Delivering Results
The result of the refresh was very positive. Both internal and external stakeholders voiced praise for the improved user focus. We saw an increase in views on our contact a cancer nurse page by as much as 365% when compared to the previous year, and small increases in both donation numbers and donation values, along with various other site statistical improvements.
